Now let's explore what to do and see on Büyükada. This island offers a mix of historical sites, natural beauty, and charming streets.
One of the most important attractions is the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Hagios Georgios Koudonas also known as Aya Yorgi Church on Yuceptepe. Founded in the 10th century, this monastery is known for its panoramic views of Istanbul. According to legend, a shepherd boy found an icon of St. George buried here in the early 17th century. The original icon is now in the Patriarchate church in Fener, but you can see a copy in the monastery church. The monastery is the focus of an annual pilgrimage every April. In the next section, you will hear about the legends and stories behind this monastery.
Another less visited but fascinating site is the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Sotiros Christou (Christ the Saviour) on İsa Tepesi. Most of what you see today dates back to the mid-19th century.
Also on Isa Tepesi is the huge Greek Orthodox Orphanage, believed to be the largest wooden construction in Europe and the second largest in the world. Built-in 1898, it was originally intended to be a casino but became an orphanage instead. Although it’s off-limits to visitors, plans for its restoration were announced in 2021.
The island is home to several churches, including the Greek Orthodox Churches of Panagia (Virgin Mary) and Hagios Demetrios (St. Dimitri), the Franciscan Church of San Pacifico, and the Armenian Church of Surp Astvadzadzin Verapolium. There is also the Hesed Le Avram Synagogue, open only in the summer, and the Hamidiye Mosque built in 1893.
Stroll along Cankaya Avenue, often described as one of the most beautiful streets in the world, to see stunning 19th-century mansions like the Con Pasa Köşkü, Yelkencizade Köşkü, Hacopolo Köşkü, Fabiato Köşkü, and Mizzi Köşkü.
For a deeper dive into the island's history, visit the Museum of the Princes' Islands (Adalar Müzesi), which opened in 2010. It tells the story of the islands’ people and buildings.
The Splendid Palace Hotel, with its two domes, is a conspicuous survivor from the island’s hotel heyday in the 19th century. It still dominates the waterfront.
The ferry terminal, designed by Armenian architect Mihran Azaryan and opened in 1915, is another must-see. Nearby is a clock tower erected in 1923, the year of the founding of the Turkish Republic.
