About the Pera Museum

Inaugurated on June 8th, 2005, the Pera Museum stands as a testament to the vision of the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation. This private museum was founded to offer an outstanding range of diverse, high-quality culture and art services, a mission that remains as relevant today as it was when the museum opened its doors to the public.

Nestled in the historic quarter of Tepebaşı, the Pera Museum occupies a remarkable building with a rich history. They were initially conceived as the talented Achille Manoussos designed the Bristol Hotel, this architectural gem. In 2003, the restoration and renovation of the building were entrusted to the skilled hands of restorer and architect SInan Genom. With masterful expertise, Genim transformed the interior into a modern and fully equipped museum and preserved the exterior, safeguarding an integral part of Istanbul's architectural flavor.

As you journey through the Pera Museum, you will witness the harmonious blend of history and contemporary art. Through the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation's three permanent collections, the museum seeks to diffuse the aesthetic beauty of these collections and create a meaningful dialogue with the public. These collections include the "Orientalist Paintings," which offer a captivating glimpse into the cultural exchange between East and West; the "Anatolian Weights and Measures," revealing the fascinating history of trade and measurement systems in Anatolia; and the "Kutahya Tiles and Ceramics," showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship and decorative artistry of Kütahya ceramics. But the Pera Museum's influence extends beyond its walls. It has organized joint projects with leading international museums, collections, and foundations, fostering cultural exchange and introducing Turkish audiences to many internationally acclaimed artists. From Jean Dubuffet to Frida Kahlo, Rembrandt to Andy Warhol, these luminaries have left their indelible mark on the walls of the Pera Museum, transcending boundaries and inspiring generations.

As you navigate the museum's corridors, be prepared to immerse yourself in a world of artistic expression and intellectual stimulation. The Pera Museum not only hosts exhibitions but also utilizes innovative methods such as publications, audio-visual audio-visual events, learning activities, and academic works to transmit the beauty and significance of these artworks to future generations.

Moreover, the Pera Museum collaborates annually with national and international institutions of art and education, supporting young artists and organizing exhibitions that expand artistic horizons. These exhibitions are accompanied by books, catalogs, audio-visual events, and learning programs, enriching your experience and providing a deeper understanding of the artworks on display. In addition to its impressive art collections, the Pera Museum is home to Pera Film, a cinema offering a wide range of screenings, from timeless classics to independent films, animated features, and thought-provoking documentaries. These screenings often complement the themes of the temporary exhibitions, creating a harmonious synergy between visual arts and cinema.
