History of Balat and Fener

Different ethnic groups such as Greeks, Jews, Armenians, and Turks lived together in these districts and brought their cultural heritage here. For this reason, while walking on the narrow cobblestone streets of Balat, it is possible to encounter many religious buildings and historical artifacts belonging to different religions. Churches, synagogues, and mosques reflect the rich and diverse cultural fabric of these neighborhoods.

During the Ottoman period, Balat and Fener became one of the important trade centers of Istanbul. The rich and merchants living here built magnificent pavilions and commercial buildings.
