The Basilica Cistern is a historical structure that has been undergoing renovations since the 18th century. Over the years, the Basilica Cistern has undergone several renovations. Architect Mehmet Aga repaired the cistern during the reign of Ahmad III in the Ottoman Empire, and later, Sultan Abdulhamid II conducted further repairs in the 19th century. Unfortunately, some columns had to be surrounded by cement in the 1955-1960 construction works, resulting in a loss of their original appearance.
The repairs of the Basilica Cistern from time to time continue today. In addition to the arrangement works carried out throughout history, visible innovations are also being made that will attract even more attention from visitors. This touristic structure has become modern and interesting with new lighting added and gives the impression that you are in a Greek underground city. At the same time, we can say these new lights mean you can take your wonderful photos.
Before the restoration works there were fish in the water in the cistern. The fish swimming in the cistern gave the cistern a more lively appearance. However, after new regulations, the fish were removed from the cistern due to physical conditions in the cistern and the water level of some areas not being suitable for fish to live.
One of the new features added to the Basilica Cistern is the exhibition called "Deeper Still". These contemporary artworks added to the cistern give you a chance to spend more time on your tour. Thanks to the "Deeper Still" exhibition, contemporary works of art in this ancient building build a bridge between the past and the present. It is time to witness this synthesis by visiting the Basilica Cistern.
