Architecture of Chora Museum

Now, let’s explore the architecture of the Chora Museum. From the outside, it looks like a simple structure made of stone and brick, but inside, it reveals impressive mosaics and intricate details. The current appearance of the structure is the result of many construction and restoration efforts over the years.

The Chora Museum consists of five main sections: the Outer Narthex, the Inner Narthex, the Naos, a two-story annex on the north side, and the Parekklesion on the south side. At the east end of the Naos, there is a bema with two domed rooms on either side. The main entrance to the Naos is through a large portal from the Inner Narthex and a smaller door on the north side. On the south side of the Naos, there is a corridor leading to the Parekklesion.

The two-story annex on the north side has long rooms with barrel vaults: the upper room is about 3 by 10 meters, and the lower room is about 3 by 10.5 meters. The Inner Narthex, on the west side of the Naos, has four rooms of different sizes; the southern and northern rooms are domed, while the others are vaulted. You enter the Inner Narthex from the west through a large door from the Outer Narthex.

The Outer Narthex consists of five sections of various sizes extending west from the Inner Narthex, and two large spaces to the south leading to an additional chapel. All these areas have vaulted ceilings. The building has eight sarcophagi: four in the Parekklesion, one on the north wall of the Inner Narthex, and three on the west wall of the Outer Narthex. The 14th-century Parekklesion, located on the south side of the Naos, extends from the Narthex.

Inside the Kariye Mosque, you can see a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality. The large arches and the pilasters extending from the walls create a balanced and visually pleasing space. Enjoy your visit!
